Dear Parents: Please be very careful when getting your child’s first instrument. Read this letter to avoid making a common mistake that makes learning a string instrument extremely difficult, and often pushes students to hate their instrument from the start. The Internet has brought with it a dramatic increase in string instruments that are of extremely poor quality. Parents are unknowingly tricked into purchasing something that looks like a string instrument because the price is much cheaper than instruments at the local store. Here’s the catch: Cheap Internet instruments are more difficult to play and tune. They tend to break easily, and they are difficult and expensive to repair. Even when played by a professional, these instruments sound as cheap as they cost. Students who are forced to play junk instruments tend not to enjoy their experience and quit early, simply because cheap instruments are difficult to play and tune. To avoid this, we have gone to local stores, tested and selected models that are made with the correct materials and adequate craftsmanship to meet three minimum standards. At the very least, these instruments produce a pleasing string sound, are relatively easy to tune and play, and are manufactured well enough to hold up under reasonable playing conditions. The stores have agreed to rent and sell these instruments at affordable prices. Be informed and consult your school or private teacher before purchasing any instrument that is not on the list. When there is no predicting how long a child will play, we encourage parents to take advantage of the rental option. After visiting the stores, if you do not feel you can afford to rent an instrument from this list, please call the string teacher and ask for help finding a decent instrument. Stores will rent and sell cheaper instruments to compete with the Internet junk; however, to give your child the best chance of experiencing success on his or her string instrument, we ask that parents stick to the recommended list of instruments on the back of this page.
